- Mercury stations retrograde in Scorpio October 24th.
- Mercury is Cazimi Nov 4th
- Mercury stations direct Nov 13th.
- Exits its shadow Nov 30th.
Mercury, the trickster, the planet of communication, travel, mind, intellect, commerce and daily transactions is currently retrograde.
Mercury retrogrades happen around 3 times a year for a few weeks at a time during which if we don’t slow down ourselves as the planet does, things can easily go awry. There's this idea that Mercury is moving backwards during a retrograde, but it's not actually the case. It's more like we are in traffic together and for a stretch we speed up and it looks as if Mercury is moving backwards, but it's really just that we've caught up and passed by Mercury momentarily. It's a kind of optical illusion that it appears to be moving backwards..
Anyhow, it is often a time when miscommunications abound, appointments get missed, we double book ourselves, we forget to write things down, fender benders are more common, flights get cancelled or delayed, we might put our foot in our mouths, lock ourselves out of our house etc. With Venus still retrograde, it kinda doubles the chances of reconnecting with an ex, to find greater understanding, integration or perhaps a chance to restore, renew or redo something we missed the first time around.
For me when I slow down during a mercury retrograde, it feels a bit akin to what happens to my being when I'm meditating illustrated by that old saying that "muddy water is cleared by leaving it alone" (Alan Watts). Something kind of magical happens when we rest~ revelations or aha moments tend to effortlessly and organically unfold when we give ourselves a chance to become clear minded.
Sometimes reflection is like that, it’s not so much an active process as it is receptive. We give our spirits a chance to shine through beyond our egos when we sit still. Accepting, allowing and letting go are some powerful and generative states of mind. They are some of the foundational pillars of mindfulness according to Jon Kabat Zinn, along with non-judging, patience, beginners mind, trust, non striving, gratitude and generosity. All great strategies to employ during these times. Except maybe don't be too generous. We might regret large purchases, especially if there's a potential for being scammed.
Here’s a few links if there’s further interest in learning more about mindfulness. I highly recommend the MBSR (mindfulness based stress reduction) program Jon K Z crafted some years ago and on a side note, if you are a fellow chronic pain sufferer like me, you can get it covered through OHIP with a doctor's note.

When we slow down during mercury retrogrades, instead of say losing important things ~ like our wallet or car keys (because we are frazzled and not in synch with the planetary energies), we might instead find things we’ve lost, we might have an important breakthrough or a revelation of some kind. We might have a chance to organize our minds and work tables so that we can focus better. It's truly a good idea to just let things percolate, even when there might be a strong urge to rush things along instead. Patience is a virtue.
I don’t know about you, but I know for me when I clean my apartment, there’s a kind of macrocosm - microcosm effect and I tend to feel like I've tidied up my insides.
I think a fall detox is also a good idea to support the astrological weather we’re in. Not an intense one, but more so a harm reduction one. Drink more water perhaps or cut something out of your diet or life-style habits you know is bad for you. Or even just drink nettle tea more regularly-I heard an herbalist once say (Matthew Wood via Ashley Elenbaas) that drinking nettle tea is kind of like a granny witch of sorts sweeping your insides clean.
In TCM ideologies the fall is a good time to support the body in letting go as well as nourishing and protecting the body as it naturally transitions to a season that moves us more inward which is pretty aligned with Scorpio energy in my books. Makes sense that Scorpio season always coincides with fall.
With Mercury in the sign of Scorpio, perhaps we’re moving through some themes that will have us passing through some metaphorical births and deaths. At best, perhaps some ego deaths, or rather transformations, as all liminal spaces are merely precipices to other stages of our continued existence.
In Buddhism, there is no birth or death, just continuous transformations and I'd say Scorpio is the same. Always shedding, purging and reinventing.
For some of us there could be deep dives into watery realms this season.
Last night I dreamed of a tornado ripping through some beautiful stretch of land in the country side. There were debris flying, killing people and everyone was running into the water, into the subconscious, into the feeling realms. Which feels so appropriate. It's time to excavate, re-frame and re-create whatever stories need to be composted in our lives, ushering along new life. For me, in this dream, because I was once caught in a Tornado-Derecho alone, it felt really healing to me that I was in a large group of people and we were all trying to protect each other in the water, shielding each other from the flying objects. Scorpio energy can be deeply healing but also destructive. It's more about shadow-work than pleasantries.
So, it could be an emotionally cathartic time. Maybe there’s some grief, or rather, maybe it’s feeling regenerative or restorative for you. There could be some taboo’s we’re exploring, some power dynamics at play, some skeletons exiting closets, some intuitive insights popping up, some passionate affairs .. secrets exposed, intimacies shared. Or perhaps you’re able to bask in some down time full of quiet longings or ponderings. Who knows, depends where it’s landing for you personally.
Either way, may we all be free of suffering on our journey through these retrogrades.
