"To go in the dark with a light is to know the light. To know the dark, go dark. Go without sight, and find that the dark, too, blooms and sings, and is travelled by dark feet and dark wings."
~Wendell Berry 1934-2026

I've been thinking about Venus' upcoming retrograde through Scorpio and have been wanting to refresh my mind and heart a bit about how to travel through these seas without getting "grabbed" as one of my astrology teachers (Adam Elenbaas) likes to say. The idea is that if we are aware of the energies at play we will be less likely to be hijacked by them. Instead we can look towards the higher octave- to see how they could play out and act more consciously with that knowledge. Let's also keep in mind that Mercury will be stationing retrograde as well Oct 24th- Nov 13th.
So, to me, this feels like a double whammy retrograde.
Astrology offers us a gift though, a glimpse into the play before it unfolds and we might as well use this tool for the collective good. Although sometimes these energies just get the best of us anyway. Sometimes I know all the potential traps and pitfalls and I fall right into them anyway. Oh well, life is meant to be lived I guess.
Venus is in detriment in Scorpio which complicates the waters a bit. On this under-world journey, Venus would much prefer to be in signs like Taurus, Libra or Pisces because in these signs she moves in ways that are compatible with her aims.
Venus ideally wants to focus on beauty, love, connection and harmony.
Scorpio on the other hand is ruled by Mars and Mars is more concerned with agency and drive, with independence, action and desire etc. Mars can be cutting and Scorpio energy can be intense, brooding, possessive, obsessive and or jealous etc.
I've been thinking about the word jealous lately, because as a kid the word was often flung around as an insult and it wasn't until more recently I discovered what this word actually means beyond the surface level: a feeling or a complex usually stemming from insecurity and or attachment wounding.
Scorpio can be an energy we associate with jealousy but beyond the surface, I think this is because there is a real deep sensitivity to Scorpios. The jealousy that arises and all of the maladaptive coping strategies that can accompany the feeling ( ex. seeking power, control, dominance, competition, punishment, passive aggressiveness, possessiveness etc) arise because there is something valuable to protect. But of course these strategies are quick and tempered, impulsive gut reactions. They are not that well thought out or attended to. They are knee jerk reactions to fears that are oh so human.
One way to move with this energy towards the higher octave is to just witness and befriend these tricky feelings that can come up sometimes and instead of reacting to them, look instead towards what it is you value in life/in relationship that you want to protect and tend to those values in open, honest, vulnerable, direct and assertive ways. Here we are using the energy of Mars and Scorpio but in a way that lends more easily towards those Venusian aims of love, beauty and connection. Words are delivered and digested better when we first digest them ourselves and then offer them up from our wise hearts.
Something else I've been meditating on a lot lately which is good medicine to bring into Venus retrograde is the reality that external things, desires and experiences are what some buddhists call "changing suffering". We think these things outside of ourselves, whether it's a car, a relationship, more money, sex, fame, chocolate cake, what have you - will bring us happiness, but really those desires are not the true causes of happiness. The true cause of happiness is our own capacity to love which is an experience we always have available and one that no one can take from us. It will never cause us to suffer. Our attachments might but not our genuine capacity to love. It will always nourish us and others in the best of ways.
Another thing we can do is to spend these three weeks meditating on the things that might come up for us more privately. We can reflect and journal, notice what's yet to be composted in our lives.
In preparation lately I've been going through every single item in my house and asking if it sparks joy for me (Marie Kondo's famous wise words when it comes to de-cluttering spaces). I have thrown out a lot of old school papers, donated clothes away and sold some things on Market place that I haven't used in years etc. and it is feeling SO good. My space feels free-er, lighter, clean, unencumbered.
In general with Venus and Mercury stationing retrograde soon, we can ask ourselves: what old habits, thoughts, beliefs about myself, others or the world can I purge? What life style choices, relationship patterns and or tangible things are needlessly taking us space in my house and psyche rent free? What of these things are getting in my way, eating up my energy, contributing to a dis-ease state, keeping me stuck in ego stories or just collecting dust with no real purpose? Throw them away. Give them away. Make a buck and save it for a much needed vacation!
Venus can represent love, beauty and connection, but she can also represent money so it's wise to slow down in this regard to. Meaning it's not always the most favourable time to make big purchases or decisions related to money. We can apply the same to relationships and or appearances/aesthetics. It's maaaaybe not the best time to buy a house, a car, start a new relationship or invest in a new wardrobe or tattoo.
I remember one Venus retrograde, I was taking a bath with candles in this swanky apartment building, feeling myself and then leaned back at one point and my hair caught on fire. So it's I guess (if you're clumsy like me) not always a choice when it comes to appearances. You might accidentally give yourself a bad hair cut. So, best to be careful, go slowly, pay attention.
Exes often circle back around to tie up loose ends, metabolize relational lessons that were left hanging, incomplete, undigested. Re-visiting old flames can be nice sometimes but most often in the end during retrogrades - it's usually just a great reminder of the reasons things ended in the first place. Though sometimes necessary to re-visit, it's maybe wiser to refrain instead, so old hurts don't get re-inflammed. It's good to have patience with ourselves and each other, especially with both Venus and Mercury going retrograde.
Working with retrograde energies reminds me a bit of how I was taught by Toka-pa Tuner (in this "dream drops" course i took a while back) to work with dreams. She likened it to a process of courtship. She describes courtship in relation to dream-work, as "the art of circling someone for an extended period of time, learning how to approach the other with respect and tenacity. Discovering what they love, what they long for, and devoting oneself to giving them that thing. When we practice dream-work in this context, our goal is no longer acquisitional but devotional, in the hopes that if we make ourselves trustworthy enough, the soul will reveal to us its secret longing. Our lives then become the response, the attempt to fulfill that longing.
She elaborates by inviting us to "imagine you are walking in the deepest part of the forest and you come upon a small, red fox. He stops in his tracks and locks eyes with you. You don't say to yourself, "This fox belongs to me". More likely you drop into amazement for a moment in eternity together. Like meeting an animal in the forest, we want to create an atmosphere of approachability when working with our dream figures. Through our qualities of stillness, curiosity, and compassion, the symbols might decide to reveal their concealed medicine or allyship."
Although Toko-pa is discussing dream work here, I would argue that our waking life can be approached with the same kind of presence, wonder and amazement when it comes to the energetic currents we are moving through. Just like a dream, can we can also court these retrogrades with stillness and curiosity? When we do so, when we slow down and listen, our waking life often becomes more meaningful, magical, medicinal and full of wonder.
What symbols, meaning or teachings might be longing to work their way into our lives throughout these periods?
Can we be fully present with what is unfolding in our lives over the next few months?
Maybe in this waking life dream we are weaving together ~ a new teacher is about to emerge, or a life-altering revelation, perhaps an old lover from a past life will be paying us a visit.... A whole new way of working with life or death might be slowly working its way towards us, longing to take root and transform our minds and hearts.
Who knows...
but the dreams themselves.
